Eye on the Prize: Staying Focused on Teaching, Learning and District Goals
The role of the board isn't to teach students, plan professional development for teachers, or manage the day-to-day operations of the district. So how can your board have a direct impact on student learning to achieve your district's goals?

The Riverside School Board and superintendent recently found the answer to this question. They transformed the way they approach leadership to achieve district priorities. Their governance team will share examples of the tools they developed that impact how they work at the board table, make decisions, and communicate their work with district staff and the public.

Charting the Path to Success Using Board Self-Assessments—A Deeper Dialogue Session
Iowa Code does not mandate board self-assessment, but it’s a key competency encouraged in IASB's Standards for Effective School Boards. Board self-assessment is an opportunity for the whole board to evaluate operations and culture, and for board members to reflect on individual contributions to the successes and failures of the board. In this interactive session, you'll hear how a local school board and an AEA board used self-assessment this past year to reflect upon and identify ways to strengthen their governance team. You'll also explore sample instruments available through IASB and network with other participants around the potential power of board self-assessment.

Going Beyond the Three R’s to Ensure Student Well-Being
Reading, writing and arithmetic are certainly important, core academic areas. However, providing the best education possible means including social, emotional, and behavioral learning and supports in the classroom—for all students. It's a challenging expectation, but districts don't have to face it alone. In this session we’ll share examples of how Iowa's Area Education Agencies (AEAs) are collaborating with districts to implement a multi-tiered system to promote and support healthy learning environments that address the ongoing well-being of ALL students. You’ll leave with questions to discuss as a governance team that help identify current challenges, existing initiatives and potential avenues for cultivating new supports through your local AEA.
